The Book of 1 John

John wrote to the churches in Ephesus to confirm the testimony that God gave eternal life and that this life is in the Son (5:11-12).  Some, however, have departed from them proving that they never had the Son and never had life (2:19), so John warns them about these men (2:26).  So, the author wanted to assure the believers that they are in the Son because they love God (1:15) and love each other (1:10).  The one who loves the Son cannot abide in sin (3:1-10), nor hate his brother (3:11-26).  The true child will obey the commandments of the Lord  (3:24), and thus can have confidence (4:17) in the Spirit’s testimony.  He loves others because he was first loved by Christ (4:7ff), whereas the false teachers show they never loved Christ (4:1-6).  The faith of the child of God conquers the world by the Spirit (5:1-6), and protects him from teaching and practice from the evil one (5:13-21).[1]
